According to new research, cancer accounts for 40% of people who die early deaths, a figure higher than any major disease such as AIDS and stroke.
The study conducted by the Cancer Research UK found that 76,000 people aged 25-74 die prematurely because of cancer each year. This accounts for 40% of the premature deaths in the country, compared to 15% from heart diseases and 9% from respiratory diseases. The figure is also higher than other illnesses such as AIDS, and other causes of early deaths such as murders, suicides and road accidents.
Among the various types of cancers, lung cancer causes more deaths at an average of 35,000 deaths annually. Bowel cancer came second at 16,000 deaths and breast cancer at 11,700.
The good news, however, is that deaths caused by cancer has dropped significantly over the past four decades. But with cancer still causing more deaths in the UK, doctors admit that they still have a lot of work ahead of them.
